Are letters of recommendation required for freshman applicants?

One letter of recommendation is required from your school counselor or a teacher from your school. In the ‘Recommenders and FERPA’ section of the Common App, you will be provided instruction on how to request letters from your school.

Additional letters are not required for admission to the university, but you are welcome to submit them for consideration. Recommenders may use their personal letterhead and address the letter to the Admission Committee. Including your full name, date of birth, and/or reference ID number in the letter will help ensure that it is added promptly to your application file.

Letters may be submitted by mail. Recommenders may also email their letters to the appropriate school counselor. Since they are not required documents, additional letters of recommendation do not have to be received by the application deadline. However, they should be sent as close as possible to the deadline so that they can be reviewed with your application. You will not be notified when your letter is added to your application.
